Led by Florian and Griffin, UFC lightweights begin to invade 145 class

With the depth at lightweight growing by the month in the UFC, those guys who have run into a brick wall for a title shot, are dropping to 145 pounds. Add Tyson Griffin and Kenny Florian to list of fighters working to shed more weight and fight at featherweight.

Florian was a good-sized lightweight, so the immediate reaction is - how will cut another 10 pounds? The New England-native did his homework.

"I put a lot of thought into it, spoke with my coaches and everybody involved and decided that I am going to try it. I'm going to go for it," Florian told Franklin McNeil, his partner on MMA Live. "I started playing around with the idea: could I make 145? Originally, I didn't think it was possible."

The 5-foot-10 Florian, who was once the runnerup on Season 1 of "The Ultimate Fighter" at 185 pounds, consulted with experts.

"I spoke with a few nutritionists, got their opinions, told them what my body fat was, my walking-around weight, all that stuff and the general consensus was that it was very possible." said Florian.

His manager said that Florian doesn't expect a title shot right off the bat. He'd like a few fights at featherweight to adjust to the weight cut.

Florian (14-5, 11-4 UFC), ranked No. 6 in the USA Today/Bloody Elbow Lightweight top 25, has been a force in the UFC, but he had difficulty getting past former lightweight champ B.J. Penn and was dominated by the current No. 1 contender Gray Maynard.

While it waits for younger fighters to move up the ladder, the UFC's featherweight division could use the infusion of experienced talent. The promotion toyed with the idea of having Florian and Aldo meet at a catchweight, but the fight fell through.

The USA Today/BE featherweight rankings have UFC fighters ranked throughout the top 15 (3. Manny Gamburyan; 4. Michihiro Omigawa; 6. Diego Nunes; 9. Mark Hominick; 10. Dustin Poirier; 12. Chad Mendes; 13. Josh Grispi; 14. Mike Brown). Hominick is scheduled to face Aldo at UFC 129 in April. Beyond that there's no glamour matchup on the horizon for Aldo.

Down the road, Griffin could also be in the mix. Before a UFC 90 loss to Sean Sherk, He was inching toward a title shot. Since then, he's struggled with injuries and conditioning issues. He's also mired in a three-fight losing skid at 155.

"I’ve got some big plans for 2011, and unfortunately they’re put on hold right now, but those plans are to move to 145 and make a run for that belt. So you can see me at a new weight class looking stronger and better than ever hopefully,” Griffin on his website.

He also needs to rehab from recent knee surgery.

STRIKEFORCE "FEDOR VS. SILVA" RESULTS: Sergei Kharitonov knocks Andrei Arlovski out cold, earns first semifinal spot in Heavyweight World Grand Prix

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Strikeforce's Heavyweight World Grand Prix kicked off on Saturday night on Showtime from the IZOD Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey, and the first fighter to advance to the semifinals of the tournament was the least known name in the field.

Sergei Kharitonov needed just 2:49 to knock out Andrei Arlovski in the first tournament quarterfinal, and he is the first man to punch his ticket to round number two.

The fight began with Kharitonov pressing Arlovski to the cage, where he kept him for much of the fight. Arlovski fought back with punches and kicks, landing some nice combinations and scoring with his strikes. But after missing an overhand right, Arlovski was tagged with a counter-uppercut.

After getting tagged, he backed up into the cage, and Kharitonov turned on the assault. He landed a number of hard strikes, hurting Arlovski with numerous punches, and then dropped him with a right hook as Arlovski tried to circle away. He was ready to stop there, but with the ref not stepping in, Kharitonov landed a few more strikes to the downed Arlovski, who went out cold.

Kharitonov now meets the winner of the April 9 bout between Brett Rogers and Josh Barnett.

Penick's Analysis: That was kind of sad to watch. Arlovski's chin has deteriorated to such a point that getting punched in the face puts him completely out of it until the knockout punch lands. That was vicious, and a nice statement from Kharitonov that he's a legitimate threat in this tournament field, but the story of this fight may be that Arlovski may be at the end of his fighting career.

UFC NEWS: Featherweight Chad Mendes signs four-fight contract extension

Undefeated featherweight Chad Mendes has a lot to celebrate this week. After successfully making his UFC debut with an impressive performance against Michihiro Omigawa, Mendes has now signed on for his first UFC contract.

Mendes Tweeted late Wednesday a picture of him signing his new deal, which MMAWeekly.com reports is a four fight deal.

His bout with Omigawa marked the last fight on his former WEC deal, which carried over when the organization was folded into the UFC at the outset of the year. The win moved his record to a perfect 10-0, and has earned him consideration as perhaps the top challenger in the division.

Penick's Analysis: Mendes has an extremely bright future in the featherweight division. He is rapidly improving in his striking game, and his wrestling may be unmatched at 145 lbs. His ground and pound game is getting better as well; after a couple of performances in the WEC that many labeled as "boring," Mendes has turned his intensity up and has had two fun and impressive performances in a row.

Versus gives to MMA one day, then takes the next by cancelling 'The Daily Line'

From the world of the bizarre, comes the news that Versus has cancelled "The Daily Line."

Why bizarre?

It was just a day ago that Versus upped the ante with mixed martial arts by agreeing to be a significant part of televising the new UFC.

Zuffa announced it was merging the WEC and UFC and debuting four new UFC cards on Versus in 2011, but today we got bad news that "The Daily Line" is done. Via Twitter, Sports Business Daily's John Ourand said the show was axed because of anemic ratings.

That's a lousy break for MMA and its fans. ESPN is getting more consistent with its MMA coverage on the television side but its not all the way there yet. The Worldwide Leader still doesn't send the "MMA Live" crew to every big U.S. event. That has to happen eventually.

Using "The Daily Line" for postfight coverage, Versus was doing a terrific job of covering the sport on fight nights. MMA deserves to be covered just like the other major sports with immediate reaction from experts. Live postfight interviews with the fighters are also a must.

So whether or not you liked everything about 'The Daily Line' is irrelevant. For MMA fans, less legitimate media coverage is a bad thing.

It's also a lousy break for aspiring MMA media folks. Ariel Helwani was developing into the first mainstream media voice on television. Hopefully people continue to see what he's doing as a writer/podcast host at Fanhouse and can add more television action to his plate.

I'm not a hockey fan, but this must be disappointing to the NHL. The show did a nice job of covering hockey as the sport tries to recover from a bevy of disastrous television moves the last few years.
